6 hurt after Brooklyn Center police chase ends in crash

July 16, 2022 by CBS Minnesota - WCCO 4 Leave a Comment

BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. — One person suffered serious injuries and five others were hurt Friday after a police chase in the north metro ended in a crash.

The Brooklyn Center Police Department said the pursuit started around 4:20 p.m. when officers tried to stop a murder suspect.

During the chase, officers called in a state patrol helicopter for help, although it didn’t arrive until after the pursuit was over. Officers also tried to use stop sticks to deflate the suspect’s tires, but they proved ineffective.

The pursuit ended when the suspect crashed into a car at the intersection of 53rd and Humboldt avenues, which marks the border between Brooklyn Center and north Minneapolis.

The crash flipped the car struck onto its roof. First-responders aided the five people inside, which were a mother and her children. Emergency crews brought the wounded to a nearby hospital.

Meanwhile, the murder suspect in the other vehicle was taken into custody.

While one of the people involved in the crash suffered serious injuries, all involved were listed in stable condition as of Friday evening.

Although police have released few details, they said at one point the suspect was driving 70 mph in a 30 mph zone.

Some neighbors near the scene of the crash said it was reckless for officers to pursue the suspect at such speeds.

“It’s a lot of frustration,” said Rosalind Tate said. “Why chase him through a neighborhood where you know families and kids are going to be out playing? It’s summer.”

The incident is being investigated by the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office.
