Franchise Legend Could Be Heading Back To Timberwolves

February 26, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

Kevin Garnett could join the Timberwolves' front office.

The Minnesota Timberwolves could use a little spark. After a season where they outperformed expectations and made it all the way to the Western Conference Finals, they have taken a step back. Minnesota needs a little bit of an energetic boost. A new Timberwolves rumor has surfaced, and they may be getting that boost in a way many weren’t expecting. The St. Paul Pioneer Press recently reported that former Timberwolves legend Kevin Garnett may be joining the front office. It will be interesting to see if a Kevin Garnett-Timberwolves reunion can turn the team’s fortunes.

Franchise Legend Could Be Heading Back To Timberwolves

Timberwolves Have New Ownership on the Way

One of the reasons that this Garnett-Wolves reunion is possible is because of the new ownership group that will be taking over. Alex Rodriguez and Marc Lore have officially won an arbitration ruling, and are now back on track to take over as the Wolves’ majority owners. The new owners have been at odds with the current owner, Glen Taylor, over a missed payment during their purchasing of the team.

It is common for new owners to shake things up when they take over. Often those moves end up being mistakes, but bringing a franchise legend like Garnett back to the team would certainly be a good way of winning over the fans. Garnett probably would already be a part of the Wolves organization if he wasn’t at odds with Taylor over not having his jersey retired.

KG’s Post-Career Work

Garnett has not taken on any formal roles with the Timberwolves or any other NBA team in terms of ownership or front-office positions. However, he has remained involved in basketball through various media and business ventures. Most famously, he has been a guest broadcaster and NBA analyst for TNT.

Garnett also has a podcast that has been popular among NBA fans. Through his various media ventures, Garnett has kept close relationships within the NBA community and still has a lot of respect among current players. He also has probably made a few enemies along the way with some of his scorching hot takes.

A Kevin Garnett-Timberwolves Reunion Could Be Perfect

Getting a respected veteran like Garnett in the front office would be great for the Timberwolves. Anthony Edwards for one could definitely benefit from having someone like Garnett around. Garnett was an MVP in the league and has a championship under his belt. These are both accomplishments that are real possibilities for Edwards to achieve.

Garnett in the front office could also be a pull for free agents and trade targets. However, the Timberwolves have never been a top destination for free agents in the past. That being said, the new wave of players in the NBA seem to have an interest in playing for teams and front offices that employ former players. Garnett could come in and help bring more talent to Minnesota. If he is able to pull that off, the Wolves’ new ownership (and their fans) would be elated. Hopefully, Garnett will join the front office and instantly start paying dividends.
