Lynx 91, Sky 68: Picking Up Where They Left Off

The Minnesota Lynx opened up the second half of the season out of the All-Star break with a blowout win over the Chicago Sky on Tuesday night at Target Center.

With the WNBA All-Star break behind us, the Minnesota Lynx have regrouped, recharged, and rested up — well, maybe with the exception of StudBudz — for the second half of the regular season.

Minnesota got back to action Tuesday night at Target Center, opening up a four-game homestand with yet another matchup against the Chicago Sky.

And as was the case leading up to the All-Star break, the Lynx added another game to the win column, defeating Chicago 91-68 for the third time this season.

With the victory, Minnesota extends its winning streak to three in a row and remains atop the WNBA standings with a 21-4 record.

Bouncing Back with Big Second Quarter

Minnesota got off to a slow start in the game, trailing by as much as seven with Chicago owning the rebounding battle in the opening frame and taking an early 24-18 advantage going into the second quarter.

The Lynx responded before halftime and shot off any rust that might have been present after the break, not only fighting back into the game but taking things over after a disappointing start.

Minnesota went on to outscore Chicago 29-14 in the second quarter and scored on its last 11 possessions leading up to halftime, capping things off with a Napheesa Collier buzzer-beater before the half to hold a 47-38 edge at the break.

Stepping on the Gas

The Lynx wasted no time getting right back into things to begin the second half, picking up where they left off before halftime by blowing the game wide open.

Minnesota absolutely stepped on the gas in the third quarter while locking Chicago down on its offensive end, leading by as much as 23 points and cruising to yet another victory.

It was another well-balanced performance for the Lynx, notably the starting five, who all ended in double figures. Collier and Kayla McBride led the way, with Collier doing a little bit of everything with 19 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and four blocks, and McBride putting together a strong showing with 19 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists.

Behind them, Bridget Carleton had a nice showing with 11 points, five rebounds and three steals, followed by Alanna Smith with 10 points and four boards and Courtney Williams with 10 points, seven assists and a team-best plus-minus of +29.

Staying Hot

Not only did the Lynx extend their overall winning streak to three straight games to grab win No. 21 and continue to comfortably hold onto the top spot in the standings, but they also remained perfect at home by improving to an impressive 13-0 at Target Center.

Along with that, Minnesota’s defense shined once again and locked down Chicago offensively to allow for the Lynx’s offense to take the game over. The Lynx held the Sky to 39.3% shooting from the field, improving to 174-9 since 2011 when keeping an opponent under 40% from the field. It is the 12th time this season Minnesota held an opponent under 40%.

Next Up

The Lynx remain at home and continue in their current four-game homestand to open the second half of the season, shifting their focus to the Las Vegas Aces on Friday night at Target Center.

That game will tip off at 6:30 PM CT and can be seen nationally on ION as part of ION Friday Night in the WNBA.
