Men’s and Women’s Big Ten Opponents Announced

June 18, 2022 by The Daily Gopher Leave a Comment

Bjorn Franke—Gophersports.com

We know who and where the Gopher men and women will play this season, just not when

Earlier this week the Big Ten released the 2022-23 conference opponents for both the men’s and women’s basketball seasons. Minnesota knows who and where they will play this season, just not when. Read on to see just who Ben Johnson and Lindsay Whalen’s squads will be facing:

Minnesota Gophers Men’s Opponents:

Teams Minnesota will play both home and away:

Illinois Fighting Illini

Maryland Terrapins

Michigan Wolverines

Nebraska Cornhuskers

Purdue Boilermakers

Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Wisconsin Badgers

Teams the Gophers will only play on the road:

Michigan State Spartans

Northwestern Wildcats

Ohio State Buckeyes

Teams Minnesota will only face at Williams Arena:

Indiana Hoosiers

Iowa Hawkeyes

Penn State Nittany Lions

In year two of the Ben Johnson era at the U Minnesota will see a home slate full of familiar faces with all of the quadrangle of hate opponents coming to The Barn this season. The three home only games feature two fun teams in Iowa and Indiana, and a meh game against Penn State, while Gopher fans will miss Michigan State and Ohio State coming to the Barn and could care less about Northwestern. It seems like a fairly even schedule split for Minnesota.

Minnesota Gophers Women’s Basketball Opponents:

Teams Minnesota will play both home and away:

Illinois Fighting Illini

Ohio State Buckeyes

Penn State Nittany Lions

Purdue Boilermakers

Wisconsin Badgers

Teams the Gophers will only play on the road:

Iowa Hawkeyes

Maryland Terrapins

Michigan State Spartans

Northwestern Wildcats

Teams Minnesota will only face at Williams Arena:

Indiana Hoosiers

Michigan Wolverines

Nebraska Cornhuskers

Rutgers Scarlet Knights

With just 18 conference games on the women’s side comparted to 20 on the men’s the schedule gets broken up a bit more. Minnesota only gets five home and homes this season with four of the five finishing near the bottom of the conference standings along with the Gophers a year ago. Standing out is Ohio State won the Big Ten in 2021-22.

Minnesota will only head to Iowa and face nemesis Caitlin Clark and the Hawkeyes in Iowa City next season along with a top team in Maryland, and middle of the pack teams in Michigan State and Northwestern.

Minnesota will be the location of the return of former Gopher Sara Scalia as the now Indiana Hoosier will play her former team only once at the Barn this season. They get an advantage with Michigan at home as well as the Wolverines were 9-0 at home in Big Ten play a season ago but just 4-4 on the road.

Full game times, and TV will be announced at a later date along with the full non-conference schedules. Big Ten schedules are likely to kick off in early December with a pair of games with the remainder of the conference season restarting near New Year’s.
