The final roster spot goest to a North Carolina transfer. Here’s what you need to know.
Cade Tyson
Pos: F
Ht: 6’7”
Wt: 200
Tyson played his high school basketball for Carmel Christian in North Carolina. As a senior, he led this team to the 4A State Championship, where he scored 31 points in the championship game. He averaged 24 points and 8 rebounds per game as a senior and he was named North Carolina Mr. Basketball in 2022.
For college, he committed to Belmont and was a standout for the Bruins over his first two years. As a sophomore, Tyson averaged 16 points per game and 6 rebounds, while shooting 46.4% from three. After two years at Belmont, he transferred to North Carolina ,where he struggled to find meaningful minutes, playing about 8 minutes per game.
Tyson’s brother, Hunter, is a former Clemson Tiger who is currently on the Denver Nuggets roster.
What is next?
This move might be a perfect fit for Tyson and Minnesota. His ability to rebound from the wing, play a little bit of PF and most importantly, his ability to shoot open threes is going to be big for Medved and the Gophers.
I would not expect that Tyson is going to be a creator. I also do not expect he will be back to scoring 16 points per game, but he will be a 10-12 ppg game scorer with 5+ rebounds. Adding a kid who can shoot 40% or more from three is going to help this team.
Now the roster appears to be set and the summer can get going with the team learning to play together and adapt to the style of play they’ll be asked to do. More to come on the new, Gopher roster and what we can expect next season.
