The Green Bay Packers will need to find their next quarterbacks coach after the Philadelphia Eagles hired Sean Mannion to become their new offensive coordinator. Mannion has quickly established himself as one of the NFL’s fastest-rising young assistants, making a move to a coordinator role feel inevitable.
Green Bay has now had three quarterbacks coaches under Matt LaFleur. Luke Getsy held the position from 2019 through 2021, a stretch that coincided with Aaron Rodgers winning back-to-back MVPs. Getsy also served as Jordan Love’s first quarterbacks coach in the NFL, playing a role in his early development.
Getsy left in 2022 to become the Chicago Bears’ offensive coordinator, but they fired him after the 2023 season, and he returned to Green Bay in 2024. After Getsy left, Tom Clements came out of retirement to once again serve as Green Bay’s quarterbacks coach. He worked with Aaron Rodgers in his final year in Green Bay and then coached Jordan Love through his first two seasons as a starter. After Clements’ second retirement, the job ultimately went to Mannion.
AtoZ Sports’ Wendell Ferreira recently put together an interesting list of potential candidates Green Bay could bring in to work with Love. That said, the Packers typically apply the same philosophy to their coaching staff as they do to the draft: develop from within. Given that approach, the most logical scenario may be Luke Getsy once again serving as Green Bay’s quarterbacks coach.
As mentioned earlier, Getsy served as Love’s position coach during his rookie season and also held the role of passing-game coordinator in 2020 and 2021. He returned to Green Bay in 2024 in a part-time capacity as a defensive consultant, before spending the 2025 season as a full-time senior assistant.
“He’s a guy that I have a lot of respect for. Not only as a football coach, but as a man,” LaFleur said in 2025. “[Getsy is] extremely organized, really smart, I think he sees the game the right way. He’s brought a lot of cool ideas as we went through all our cutups as a staff. He’s going to bring a lot of value to us.”
Ultimately, the choice of quarterbacks coach may matter less than it once did. Love is now a veteran and has performed as a top-five quarterback since becoming a starter in EPA per play and adjusted EPA per play. He has established himself as one of the league’s premier quarterbacks, so whoever fills the role will focus on refinement and continuity rather than hands-on development.
Instead, one potential emphasis could be adding another layer of creativity to Green Bay’s offense. It often felt stagnant in short-yardage situations and has struggled to execute consistently inside the red zone.
We’ll see how the next chapter unfolds. Still, given Green Bay’s history of promoting from within, there’s a strong chance Luke Getsy will once again get the opportunity to work with Jordan Love closely. Ideally, he’ll help guide him toward an MVP-caliber season.
