The Packers Should Keep an Eye On The Michael Thomas Situation

August 10, 2021 by Zone Coverage Leave a Comment

The Green Bay Packers have resolved the situation with their disgruntled superstar, at least temporarily. Now that they are in a good place with No. 12, they should turn their attention to a different team’s disgruntled star. That team is the New Orleans Saints, and that disgruntled player is Michael Thomas.

The New Orleans superstar has been surrounded by rumors since opting for a delayed surgery that put him out for the beginning of the 2021 season.

He added to the situation by putting out a tweet on Monday insinuating that the entirety of his situation is not being told.

When head coach Sean Payton was asked if he’d like to comment on the tweet he chose not to.

“No,” he said. “I don’t want to have a press conference based on social media,”

According to an NFL.com article from Kevin Patra:

Thomas’ tweet came after Jeff Duncan of The Times-Picayune reported that the wideout ignored calls from coaches and trainers for three months this offseason. The social media response from Thomas suggests there is much more to the story.

NFL fans have seen this over and over. When a player takes to social media there is something to it. Frustrations are boiling and they needed to speak. This situation seems very similar to the Stefon Diggs situation with the Minnesota Vikings a couple of years ago and odds are it ends in a very similar way.

The Green Bay Packers should consider treating the NFL season like a major league baseball team. With no guarantee that Aaron Rodgers will play for the green and gold past this season, it might make sense to go all-in on a midseason trade once Thomas returns from the injured list. Would the price be too much? Maybe. But could it be worth it? Very likely. If you add a superstar like Thomas to the offense that already exists in Green Bay, there’s not an organization in the league that could come close to stopping them.

Most Packer fans will argue that a team shouldn’t sacrifice its future for one run at a title, but when you’re close you should consider going for it. Opportunities to win a Super Bowl are very rare in this league, and if the Packers feel like they are legitimate contenders and Michael Thomas ends up wanting out, Green Bay would be very smart to pay close attention to the situation.
