Derek Falvey Taking Over as Twins Team President Next Week

February 28, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

Dan Hayes of The Athletic reported today that Derek Falvey will officially begin his tenure as Twins president on Monday, March 3, succeeding Dave St. Peter, who held the position for 22 years. This transition comes as no surprise, as the Twins initially announced the leadership change in November. St. Peter will now move into a strategic advisor role. This completes the Twins’ executive leadership succession plan announced by Twins Control Owner Jim Pohlad and club Executive Chair Joe Pohlad on November 12, 2024.

Derek Falvey Named Twins President of Baseball Operations

Joining the Twins in 1990, St. Peter served as team president during the franchise’s resurgence in the early 2000s. Under his leadership, the Twins secured multiple division titles, made several playoff appearances, and built a new stadium. He was involved in hiring four general managers and three different managers. While the team endured difficult stretches—most notably a record-breaking run of postseason series losses—his tenure featured significant successes. Among them was securing a long-term deal for Joe Mauer, ensuring the franchise icon spent his entire career in Minnesota.

Perhaps St. Peter’s most defining achievement was overseeing the construction of Target Field, solidifying the Twins’ presence in Minnesota for future generations. In his new advisory role, he is expected to assist with the transition to new ownership and contribute to the team’s evolving broadcast partnership with MLB. He will also focus on maintaining Target Field’s reputation as a premier venue.

Now entering his ninth season with the Twins, Falvey will retain his role as President of Baseball Operations while also taking on business-side responsibilities. Initially hired by St. Peter in 2016, Falvey’s first major task was modernizing the team’s baseball operations. Since then, the Twins have reached the playoffs in four of his eight seasons. In November, the team announced his promotion while also elevating Jeremy Zoll to general manager. Although Falvey was an external hire in 2016, the promotions of both Zoll and Falvey reflect the organization’s commitment to internal advancement.
