Know Thine Enemy: Nothing active on SB Nation, but Fish On First seems to be going strong

In this Thursday space you are accustomed to a Tawny intro—whether that be an epic rant, snarky indifference, or fan fiction about the Pohlads tearing off their faces Scooby-Doo style to reveal their actual origins as displaced Soviet oligarchs.

Alas, I am either slightly less un-hinged or slightly less cool—probably some combination of both as per the usual—to provide that level of content today. Instead, my thoughts on the Minnesota Twins right now can be summed up in one word: confusion.

(BTW—Electric Light Orchestra is performing at Xcel Energy Center on 9/30/24)

A few examples…

  • How can this be the same team that at different points this summer won 12 consecutive games and were 17 games over .500?
  • How can the bats (last night excluded) have gone so quiet and the bullpen collapsed so comprehensively?
  • How can the same fans that spontaneously chanted “Let’s go Twins!” in the playoffs around this time last year now ring out “Sell the team!” after each loss?
  • How can part of me—that which loves baseball and will support the Twins until my final breath—want them to prolong the seemingly-inevitable collapse until the bitter end while another part of me just wants the misery to be over because it is too painful to behold?

A lot of conflicting emotions in Twins Territory at the moment, to be sure. But as Rocco Baldelli is fond of intimating: “we do this shh—stuff—every day”. So, the games continue regardless of my say in the matter.

Tonight isn’t a must-win yet—but it’s a must-win if you don’t want to have to rely on everything going the Twins’ way over the final 3 days of the regular season to make the playoffs. David Festa looks to secure a series victory over the Miami Marlins backed by this lineup…
