It feels like it’s been a while since the Minnesota Twins entered the All-Star break riding a wave of momentum — but in 2025 they are working to flip that script. Today, they’ll look to complete a three-game sweep of the NL Central-leading Chicago Cubs in a 12:10 p.m. matinee at Target Field.
Winners of four of their last five games, the Twins have quietly begun to turn things around after an uneven first half. At 45–47, they’re inching back toward the .500 mark, and a sweep over a division leader would be a strong way to punctuate the first half of the season before taking on a poor-standing Pirates team in the final series before the break.
The big question today into this weekend is when will Byron Buxton see the field again. He was listed as day-to-day after leaving the game yesterday with a left-hand contusion. The Twins have the Pirates this weekend and then Buxton is supposed to be off to the All-Star game where he will compete in the 2025 Home Run Derby. We will see how that all pans out.
After being hit on the left hand in the 1st inning, Byron Buxton has now been removed from the game in the 2nd inning.#MNTwins https://t.co/JkSWzdWPpE pic.twitter.com/QitBjgouno

Before we get into today’s 12:10 matchup. we have to briefly talk about that spectacular delayed steal pulled off by the Twins yesterday to get the fourth run across the plate. That is what I’m talking about! Some aggressive moves to score runs yesterday – it happened after Royce didn’t get home on a Wallner single, but have no fear, the delayed steal was here and executed nearly perfectly to get that run across.
Now to today’s game… two days before the All-Star duel between Paul Skenes and Joe Ryan. Thursday the Twins have Chris Paddack (3-7, 4.64 ERA) on the bump, making his 19th start of the season. He has faced the Cubs twice in his career with a 1-1 record. A righty is on the mound for the Cubs. Colin Rea (6-3, 4.13 ERA) is getting the start. He has been successful in his last three starts, taking down the Cardinals and Astros. In 2023 he faced the Twins and got the loss.
If the Twins can close out the Cubs today, they’ll be going into the weekend with some confidence and some much-needed momentum.
Oh, I almost forgot, yesterday especially, the boys in the booth were awesome and made the game so enjoyable and comical to watch.
Go Twins!
