Tigers Acquire Two Right-Handed Veterans from Twins

July 29, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

The Detroit Tigers have made their first official trade of the trade deadline, acquiring right-handers Chris Paddack and Randy Dobnak in exchange for minor league catcher Enrique Jimenez.

Paddack’s Pedigree

Paddack is coming off one of his best starts of the season, going six innings and striking out eight batters on the road against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He does have an ERA of 4.66, which is why the Tigers were able to get him for so cheap. Paddack is in the final year of a three-year/$12,525,000 contract and will be a UFA once the season is complete. He will fill the void left by righty Reese Olson, as it was just announced today that he will miss the rest of the regular season with a shoulder strain. Tigers’ manager A.J. Hinch did say it is a possibility Olson returns for the postseason, but clearly the team wanted some insurance just in case.

Paddack doesn’t have the most appealing stats in the world, but the one thing he is great at is limiting walks. This season, he has a walk rate of 5.7%, which puts him in the 87th percentile among qualified pitchers. He can be an “innings eater” for a Tigers squad that is just looking to make it into October with a healthy enough roster. He is mostly a four-seam and changeup pitcher, but the slider has been one of his most effective pitches. One wonders if the Tigers will do anything in particular to tinker with Paddack’s pitch arsenal.

Randy Dobnak

There’s not much to say about Randy Dobnak other than he is another arm the Tigers can use down the stretch of the season. He doesn’t carry the most impressive stats either, but he is someone who can be used when the Tigers are either up a lot or down a lot. Given the number of innings the bullpen has already thrown, it’s understandable why the Tigers would want another arm to throw on the mound.
