The Twins ride one big inning and an strong Simeon Woods Richardson start to their second straight win.
After a long stretch of poor starts from their pitchers, the Twins got a much-needed scoreless outing from Simeon Woods Richardson and huge sixth inning to salvage a split against the Mariners and hopefully start to turn the ship around.
Woods Richardson was the best version of himself tonight, limiting baserunners while being incredibly efficient. He didn’t allow a hit until the fourth inning and only walked a single batter, the walks especially spelling success for a pitcher without any standout offerings. SWR was pulled after five innings and 82 pitches with the lineup coming around for a third time where he typically runs into trouble.
Offensively, the Twins had at least one baserunner in each of the first four innings but couldn’t get a run across until the fifth when Trevor Larnach blasted his 12th dong of the season to put the Twins up 2-0. Then came the sixth.
Reliever Zach Pop (NOT soda) came in for the sixth inning and was completely hung out to dry by Seattle. Brooks Lee started the inning with his 8th long dong. Ty France grounded out next and then things went downhill quickly. The next seven straight Twins reached base, helped by a Mariners error. The run was highlighted by RBI doubles from Byron Buxton and Willi Castro and capped off by a patented Matt Wallner moonshot to put the Twins up 10-0.
The Mariners would go on to add a meaningless run off of the struggling Cole Sands in the ninth inning, but the Twins got a much-needed no-stress win to end the homestand ahead of a challenging series in Detroit.
