The Twins use an absolute gem from José Berríos and 2 runs in the top of the 10th to take the series opener in Baltimore.
In order to talk about any offense in this game, we would basically have to skip all the way to the 10th inning. Up until then, save for an RBI groundout in the 3rd from Jorge Polanco and a 5th inning homer from Baltimore’s Ryan Mountcastle, pitching was the most noteworthy part of the game. Aside from the aforementioned 5th inning homer, José Berríos was almost flawless. He pitched into the 9th inning with 6 strikeouts and only 5 hits allowed, and worked quite effectively all game long. Baltimore starter Jorge Lopez had a strong outing as well, he also allowed only 5 hits over 6 innings. Through 9 innings, the score was 1-1, so the game headed to a 10th frame.
Finally, after a full regulation game with only one run for each team, there was finally some offense to speak of in extra innings. After Kyle Garlick grounded out to move extra inning runner Rob Refsnyder over to third base, a wild pitch from O’s reliever Adam Plutko allowed Refsnyder to score, making it 2-1 Minnesota in the top of the 10th. With two outs, Jorge Polanco homered to right field to extend the lead to 3-1. That would prove to be the winning run, because despite the Orioles getting a run immediately thanks to a leadoff RBI double from DJ Stewart, they weren’t able to get any more runs across in their half of the 10th. The Twins win this one by a score of 3-2, and they have now won two in a row in extra innings after dropping each of their first 8 games that went beyond 9 innings. They have also won 16 in a row over the Orioles. Your Minnesota Twins improve to 22-31, and will continue the series in Baltimore tomorrow night.
