Twins trade Carlos Correa back to Houston Astros

An only recently-rumored stunner may be the centerpiece of Minnesota’s deadline.

Midway through his marquee contract signed in the ‘22/’23 offseason, the Minnesota Twins are trading All-Star shortstop Carlos Correa back to the Houston Astros.

The rumor mill churned on this one yesterday, with reports that the Houston Astros had initiated the conversation with the Twins, and were far enough along in hypothetical negotiations that Correa himself was on record that Houston — where he began his career and still lives — would perhaps be the only destination for which he’d waive his no-trade clause.

Well, it looks like that’s exactly what’s happened.

While the return is as-yet unknown, the deal will involve some financial shenanigans between both Minnesota and Houston, as a key reason for Minnesota entertaining this trade in the first place is the incentive to get Correa’s contract — or at least a large part of it — off the books after failing to advance past the ALDS or invest in the team during his four years on the roster.

There are still more moves to come today, but this more than anything else signals a major shift for the organization and its construction of the 26-man roster. The core responsible for the 2023 Wild Card Series victory is being rapidly torn down ahead of what is becoming an increasingly more uncertain offseason.
