UFC 268 | Usman vs Covington 2 Targeted For New York

August 5, 2021 by The Sports Fan Journal Leave a Comment

Last weekend, UFC President Dana White confirmed that UFC 268 is set to take place in November of this year. The UFC event will be held in New York, and the promotion is targeting a full-capacity crowd in the Big Apple.

The UFC has had another great year so far, and the return of fans around the Octagon has been a great step in a return to some form of normality. Now, Dana White is in the process of putting together a card for UFC 268 – it’s going to be extremely exciting!

Kamaru Usman vs Colby Covington 2

The main event of UFC 268 is set to be a rematch between welterweight champion Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington. It’s a highly-anticipated fight that many UFC fans are looking forward to. Following Usman’s KO win against Jorge Masvidal back in April, many considered The Nigerian Nightmare to be arguably the pound-for-pound best fighter currently active.

It’s hard to disagree at this point, with Usman seemingly getting stronger in each and every fight. Now, Covington is up against it, and will need to cause an upset if he is going to win in November. Last time, however, it didn’t end well for the American.

The First Fight

In December 2019, Usman and Covington clashed for the first time inside the Octagon, and it was an extremely entertaining fight. The bad blood between the two was evident before the fight had even started, all of which made for a fiery bout.

In the final round of the fight, Usman connected with a punch that knocked Covington to the ground, before the referee had to jump in following Usman’s efforts to finish his opponent off. Whilst the American argued he was alright, there was no doubt that Kamaru Usman had successfully defended his welterweight title.

Justin Gaethje vs Michael Chandler

Also added to the card for UFC 268 is a lightweight clash between Justin Gaethje and Michael Chandler. Though contracts have not yet been signed, it’s likely that the two camps will agree to the fight, and it will be a huge co-main event bout on the night.

Gaethje last fought back in October of last year, where he lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov – where the Russian retired after his victory. The Highlight hasn’t returned to the Octagon yet, but it’s likely we will see him back in action in November.

For Michael Chandler, his effort for the vacant lightweight title was unsuccessful in May of this year, where he lost to Charles Oliveira. Now, the American lightweight will look to bounce back with a victory and put himself in line for another UFC lightweight title shot.
