If you can believe it, the five main special teams positions when people think of that unit — kicker, punter and long snapper, kick returner and punt returner — all likely have training camp competitions for the Vikings this offseason.
Minnesota currently has two players at each of the kicker, punter and long snapper positions. Last season, the Vikings struggled in pretty much every facet of the special teams game. The team ended up not renewing the contract of its special teams coordinator.
Now, newly promoted special teams coordinator Ryan Ficken will have a chance to make some improvements. With 2020 in mind, that’s a low bar to clear.
