Kansas City Chiefs impending free agent safety Justin Reid is gearing up for a strong interest market next month as the Super Bowl is probably his last game with the team. The Chiefs are preparing for the big game for a third straight year but the offseason doesn’t look promising since they have plenty of stars hitting the market. According to a source, one believes Reid is a special free agent due to his leadership and talent which is true considering the production he has put ever since coming into the league. Originally selected in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft, the former Stanford product began his career with the Houston Texans on a rough start battling through injuries.
However, since signing with the Chiefs in 2022, he found himself earning his first Super Bowl ring after recording five solo tackles in a win over the Eagles. Reid got better as time went by becoming one of the defensive leaders on the roster. He’s one of those “sound” safeties who can stop the run and passing game while finding a way to catch opposing athletes off guard with his power. Reid can pretty much play anywhere on the defense in the box, align in the slot, and even be reliable as a single-high safety.
He was dependable since the departure of L’Jarius Sneed last offseason after Trent McDuffie came in to fill in the shoes at cornerback. However, If this is truly Reid’s final game as the Kansas City Chief, many should anticipate him to land a history-breaking contract as a safety with the Chargers, Vikings.

The Cash Chargers
The Los Angeles Chargers have one of the most promising rosters for years to come as long as head coach Jim Harbaugh continues to play his cards right. The new leadership and regime are working handsomely well for quarterback Justin Herbert even though he needs more capable wide receivers to help him achieve further aspirations for a Super Bowl run. However, as much as they want to excel with an aggressive passing attack, they can’t hide behind the bush when it comes to their pass secondary. The unit had its moments but since Marcus Maye came in to assist the safety unit behind Alohi Gilman and Derwin James.
However, Maye and Gilman have been battling so it’s safe to say Gilman’s job may be up for grabs considering he hasn’t been able to stay healthy alongside James. Tony Jefferson with Maye are free agents this offseason which means the Chargers should be looking for an upgrade since they have the money for it. Justin Reid is only getting better each season so the team should take advantage and sign him to a long-term deal to pair with James.
Breaking the New Mold
Meanwhile, the Minnesota Vikings had one of the best safety trios coming into the 2024 campaign. Harrison Smith, Camryn Bynum and Josh Metellus have been complementing very well for each other. However, Bynum is a free agent and Smith is considering retirement.
It doesn’t help knowing the Vikings will probably lose Stephon Gilmore in their secondary too. This means the Vikings should be in the market for safety and the good news is they have the salary cap for it. Reid is coming off his best season recording a 76.9 PFF grade so he could more than likely break into a new mold here at Minnesota.
