The Minnesota Vikings are doing some roster cleaning before the start of the 2023 league year.
Just one day after the team released longtime wide receiver Adam Thielen, the Vikings are apparently making another big cut.
The Minnesota front office could be planning to release veteran safety Harrison Smith, per team insider Darren Smith.
“It’s going to continue to be a bloodbath,” Smith said.
In addition to Thielen, the team has also cut linebacker Eric Kendricks and cornerback Cam Dantzler.
Smith, a six-time Pro Bowler, has been with the Minnesota franchise since he was drafted with a first-round pick in 2012. This past season he notched 85 tackles, 10 passes defended and a career-high five interceptions.
Smith has a cap hit of more than $19 million in 2023, meaning the team could clear some significant space ($7.4 million) with his release. The Vikings are an estimated $8.6 million over the cap.
Dalvin Cook ($14.1 million cap hit) is also drawing trade interest this offseason.
