Over the weekend, the Minnesota Vikings had just one quarterback in attendance at training camp. It’s safe to say they could use some help.
It was reported rookie Kellen Mond tested positive for COVID-19 over the weekend. Kirk Cousins and one other quarterback were deemed high-risk close contacts, as a result. Only Jake Browning was available for the Vikings’ training camp practice on Saturday.
The Vikings aren’t sure when Cousins and Mond will be able to return to the practice field. In the meantime, they’re adding some depth at the quarterback position.
Minnesota has signed quarterback Case Cookus, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero. He’ll join Browning in the Vikings’ current, depleted quarterback room.
The #Vikings plan to sign QB Case Cookus, per source. He was part of today’s workout after three QBs — including starter Kirk Cousins — landed on the COVID list.

Case Cookus played college ball at Northern Arizona University. He spent five years there, throwing for 12,057 yards and 105 touchdowns with 21 interceptions.
Cookus signed with the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent in April of 2020. He was waived in early August that same year. The NAU alum signed with the Denver Broncos almost a year later, but spent just three days with the organization before he was waived once again.
Cookus is now getting another opportunity in the NFL. This time, it’ll come with the Minnesota Vikings. He’ll probably get second-team reps with Jake Browning running the first-team offense until Kirk Cousins and Kellen Mond return.
The Vikings are lucky this all happened at this point in training camp, as opposed to during the regular season.
