NFC Notes: J.J. McCarthy, Devonte Wyatt, Lions, Packers, Vikings

November 28, 2025 by NFL Trade Rumors

Lions

The Lions loss to the Packers on Thanksgiving drastically decreases their odds of winning the division, but more concerning is that they’re on the outside looking in when it comes to the NFC playoff picture.

“We dug ourselves a little bit of a hole and that’s the bottom line,” Lions HC Dan Campbell said, via DetroitLions.com. “We are in a little bit of a hole. But that’s just what it is. There’s nothing more than that. All we have to do is worry about cleaning up this and getting to next game and find a way to win the next one in front of us.”

The Lions are up against the Cowboys next week and the Rams the week after, so these will both have huge playoff implications.

Packers

The Packers had a big win on Thanksgiving over the Lions that gives them a decent shot at winning the division. However, it came at a cost.

Packers DT Devonte Wyatt appeared to suffer what could end up being a season-ending ankle injury.

After the game, Packers HC Matt LaFleur said that Wyatt’s injury made the win “bittersweet.”

“It doesn’t look good, guys. I’m sick for him. I’m sick for us,” LaFleur said, via PackersWire.com. “That’s a critical loss for our football team, for our defense, obviously. I can’t say enough great things about him in terms of just watching him mature not only as a football player but as a person. I have a lot of love for Devonte Wyatt, and I think the whole locker room does too.”

“Yeah, we’re happy about the win, but we’re sick about what happened to him,” LaFleur said.

Vikings

Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy has struggled in his first year as a starting quarterback, which has led them to a 2-4 record in his starts after going 14-3 with former QB Sam Darnold a year ago. Minnesota star WR Justin Jefferson came to his quarterback’s defense and thinks the injuries to start his career have made it tougher to adjust to the mental part of the game.

“It’s early,” Jefferson said, via ESPN’s Kevin Seifert. “He’s new to the game. He’s new to the NFL. He’s learning just like everyone else has to learn as a rookie, and he obviously had to go through the mental stage of having to overcome an injury the first year. So just a tough transition for him. But I feel like just him learning these past couple games, and of course learning [during] the stretch of this season, I feel like he’s going to bounce back in a different way than everybody else is going to think so.”
