The Cam Akers saga is over for the Rams. On Wednesday afternoon, he was traded to the Vikings for a swap of 2026 draft picks.
The Rams selected Akers in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Following a promising rookie year, he suffered a torn Achilles that kept him sidelined for most of the 2021 season.
Unfortunately for Akers, his role the past two years has been all over the place. It reached the point where he needed a fresh start.
Akers shouldn’t need much time to get acclimated with Minnesota’s playbook. After all, he worked with Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell in Los Angeles.
As per usual, the NFL community had a lot to say about this trade.
Woah. I think this is good for everyone in the world… outside of Alexander Mattison. https://t.co/QvjYdRGMz3

“This makes sense,” Mike Clay said. “Alexander Mattison needs a running mate/backup. Akers could eventually steal some touches, but it’s far from a sure thing. Remember, Minnesota signed Mattison to an extension during the offseason. He figures to remain their guy.”

“This move was made so Alexander Mattison wouldn’t be the least-explosive back on the roster anymore,” Thor Nystrom said.

Akers will most likely share touches with Alexander Mattison in the backfield.
We’ll see if Akers makes his Vikings debut this Sunday.
