While the Cleveland Browns are not in the market of being sellers yet, the Atlanta Falcons could target cornerback Greg Newsome in a trade during the 2025 campaign. According to a report, Newsome might be available at the right price, and the source believes the Falcons could be a fit. It’s easy to see why the Falcons would want to trade for Newsome, since they could benefit from the depth behind AJ Terrell and Mike Hughes. However, the team has one of the deepest groups in the nickelback area with Billy Bowman Jr. and Dee Alford, so the biggest question is whether it’s the biggest need?
The Falcons don’t need a cornerback at this stage, but it’d be nice to add a known name like Newsome to make an impact in Atlanta and a scenery change. Despite that, the reality is that Newsome will receive interest from several teams only if the Browns aren’t playoff contenders, which is likely the case. The Browns are nowhere near being contenders as of yet since they’re still determining who will be their long-term quarterback between veteran Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. While that is happening, the Browns might fire-sale again, and that could include Newsome, who may be available on the trade block, and the team might be looking to get the right offer.

Best Fits
Washington Commanders
After signing Jonathan Jones this offseason for depth, the Washington Commanders will keep a close eye on how their cornerback room will progress throughout the 2025 campaign. With Trey Amos, Marshon Lattimore and Mike Sainristil emerging as the starters on the depth chart, it’s never a bad idea to boost the corps and add a guy like Newsome right before the playoffs. The hypothetical trade might not happen anytime soon, but the Commanders could pull something off here similar to how they acquired Lattimore last year from the Saints, but Newsome might have a chance to start here.
It’s not the biggest need, but the Commanders are looking to win now, and they’re going to do whatever it takes to get into the Super Bowl.
Minnesota Vikings
Meanwhile, the Minnesota Vikings signed former Eagle, Isaiah Rodgers, who will start this season in a new scenery alongside one of the best cornerbacks in the league, Byron Murphy. The Vikings should still be in the market for a cornerback even though the starting lineup looks to be intact. The same can’t be said about the depth chart, so similar to how Stephon Gilmore was able to make an impact here last year, they could probably do the same with the presence of Newsome.
It won’t be as perfect, but the Vikings are prone to always doing well in the secondary unit.
New Orleans Saints
However, the New Orleans Saints have one of the worst secondary units in the league. Between Kool-Aid McKinstry and Alontae Taylor, the Saints could see some improvement. It will be a long journey to be back at a prime Lattimore and Paulson Adebo back in 2023, but they should trade for Newsome if McKinstry and Taylor can’t fill those shoes.
