Yes, he’s back again

With the status of Aaron Jones unknown for the immediate future, the Minnesota Vikings made a trade on Tuesday to help shore up their running back room.

The Vikings have made a trade for Cam Akers. Yes, again.

This time, the Vikings are sending a conditional 2026 sixth-round pick to the Houston Texans in exchange for Akers and a conditional 2026 seventh-round pick. This is the second time in as many seasons that the Vikings have traded to acquire Akers’ services. Last September, they made exactly the same deal. . .same picks, same year, and everything else. . .with the Los Angeles Rams, though the conditions that Akers needed to meet for the pick swap to take place were not met.

Akers appeared in six games for Minnesota last season, carrying the ball 38 times for 138 yards and a score. He then tore his Achilles in the Vikings’ win over Atlanta last season, marking his second such injury in the past three seasons. The Vikings thought that Akers was going to re-sign with them during the offseason, but he instead chose to sign with Houston.

So far this year, Akers has carried the ball 40 times for 147 yards and a touchdown. He scored the only points Houston managed in their 34-7 loss to the Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium back in Week 3.

Because we’re on the cutting edge here at The Daily Norseman, we already have a picture of what Cam Akers might look like when he hits the field in a Vikings uniform.

Whether Jones is ready to come back for this Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions or not, the Vikings needed to do something to shore up their depth at the running back spot, and that’s precisely what they’ve done. Akers gives them someone who can carry the load in a pinch and is familiar with the offense, so he should be able to step in right away if needed.

Welcome (back) to Minnesota, Cam Akers!
