Vikings add Sean Mannion to 53-man roster

It’s officially official

In a move that pretty much everyone expected was coming this week, the Minnesota Vikings have signed quarterback Sean Mannion to the 53-man roster to serve as the backup to Kirk Cousins.

Mannion was signed to the team’s practice squad shortly before the start of the season and had been promoted by the team to the active roster in each of the first two weeks of the season. Per league rules, in order to have him on the roster again, the team needed to sign him to the 53, and that’s what they’ve done.

In order to make room for Mannion on the roster, the team released running back Ameer Abdullah. The team had signed Abdullah to the main roster last week and intends to bring him back to the practice squad tomorrow.

(The announcement has already been made that Abdullah is coming back to the practice squad, but technically a team can’t release a player and sign him to the practice squad on the same day, so that move won’t become official until tomorrow.)

When he comes back, Abdullah will be under the same restrictions as any other player. He was promoted from the practice squad to the active roster once before he was signed last week, so he can only be promoted once more before the team has to make him a permanent part of the roster.

It’s not the most exciting news to come out of the Twin Cities Orthopedics Performance Center this season, but it did happen, so there you go.
