Vikings exploring a couple of options at quarterback

Neither of whom you’ve probably heard of

With three of their quarterbacks out because of COVID-19 protocols until at least Thursday, the Minnesota Vikings are looking at a couple of potential options at quarterback to make sure that third-year man Jake Browning isn’t taking all of the snaps for the next week or so.

As we mentioned yesterday, rookie Kellen Mond tested positive for COVID, and both Kirk Cousins and Nate Stanley were deemed as close contacts, meaning that they’ll have to isolate for five days. That left Browning as the lone quarterback for last night’s practice at TCO Stadium, and by all accounts he did a solid job and may have even locked up the #2 spot on the depth chart.

However, the team is going to try to spread the wealth a little bit and bring in a pair of quarterbacks that you’ve likely not heard of prior to now.

One of those is former Northern Arizona signal-caller Case Cookus. Cookus went undrafted in 2020 and had brief stints with both the New York Giants and the Denver Broncos. In his career at Northern Arizona, he threw for over 12,000 yards and had a TD-to-INT ratio of 5:1, which is pretty solid.

The other player is Jackson Erdmann, a graduate of Rosemount High School that played his college ball at St. John’s (the one in Minnesota). He went undrafted as well, and played in the new Fan Controlled Football League this past year. He was the quarterback of the Wild Aces, the team that won the FCF Championship in the league’s first season. This will be Erdmann’s second workout for the team in the course of a couple of weeks, as he was also a part of the workout that led to the Vikings signing WR Dede Westbrook.

It wouldn’t appear that either of these quarterbacks would be long for the Vikings’ roster if they were to be signed, but it gives them an opportunity to impress and possibly get themselves enough buzz to get signed elsewhere. At least the Vikings won’t be down to one quarterback for very long, in any case.
