Here’s a little bit about the new guy

We briefly mentioned yesterday that the Minnesota Vikings were bringing in several quarterbacks for a workout on Monday, and they’ve decided to officially bring one of them aboard.

Per numerous sources on social media, the Vikings have signed quarterback Case Cookus to the roster. He will serve to take some of the load off of Jake Browning during practices until such time as the Vikings non-Browning quarterbacks are able to come back to practice.

Since I don’t know a whole heck of a lot about Case Cookus. . .and, let’s be honest, neither do you. . .here’s a quick biographical sketch gleaned from various sources around the interwebs.

Cookus played his college ball at Northern Arizona, which is a team in the Big Sky Conference of the FCS. In his freshman year with the Wildcats Lumberjacks back in 2015, he received the Jerry Rice Award, which is given to the most outstanding freshman at the FCS level.

He missed the bulk of both the 2016 and 2018 seasons after suffering season-ending shoulder injuries. Strangely enough, both of the injuries came against the same opponent (Eastern Washington). He redshirted after his 2016 injury, which is why he was at NAU for five seasons.

In his senior year of 2019, Cookus put up some pretty outstanding numbers, completing 60% of his passes for 4,095 yards, 31 touchdowns, and seven interceptions.

Upon going undrafted, Cookus signed with the New York Giants, but the team waived him in early August. He was then with the Denver Broncos for all of three days this past May before he was waived again.

As I’ve said previously, I’m not sure how much of a chance Cookus has to stick on the roster for the Vikings, but at the very least he gets an opportunity to get into camp and do a few things. He could, potentially, be a candidate for a practice squad spot.

Welcome to Minnesota, Case Cookus!
