Vikings working out multiple quarterbacks this week

August 1, 2021 by Vikings Wire Leave a Comment

Kellen Mond tested positive for COVID-19 this week.

Minnesota has had to put three quarterbacks through COVID-19 protocols. Those three are expected to be sidelined all this week, per Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press. On Friday, Jake Browning was the only available quarterback on the roster.

In the wake of that, Minnesota will work out some quarterbacks: Case Cookus and Jackson Erdmann.

Erdmann already worked out with the Vikings recently. He played for Rosemount in high school and St. John’s in college, both of which are in Minnesota.

According to Ben Goessling of the Star Tribune, Erdmann trained with Adam Thielen, Chad Beebe, C.J. Ham, Tyler Johnson, Nate Stanley, Kellen Mond and others in the Twin Cities this offseason.

Per Tomasson, Cookus is flying to the Twin Cities and would be ready to practice on Monday. Cookus signed with the Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2020. Before that, Cookus played his collegiate football at Northern Arizona. He threw for 4,114 yards, 31 touchdowns and seven interceptions in his final season with the Lumberjacks.

There’s no telling just to what extent this situation will affect the Vikings’ quarterback situation. However, Mike Zimmer said recently in regards to Browning: “He’s vaccinated. That helps to be the backup.” Right now, Browning appears to be the only available quarterback on the team. That could change soon, though.
