Minnesota Wild Extend Emerging Goaltender

October 4, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

The Minnesota Wild continue to make moves before the start of the regular season. News emerged on Saturday morning that the Wild have signed Filip Gustavsson to a contract extension. The deal is a five-year extension worth $34 million. This works out to a $6.8 million average cap hit and runs until the end of the 2030-31 season.

Minnesota Wild Ink Filip Gustavsson to Contract Extension

Gustavsson has played for the Ottawa Senators and the Wild across his five-year NHL career. Last season, the Swede registered a 31-19-6 record with a 2.56 goals-against average. The 27-year-old also registered five shutouts and a .914 save percentage.

He has a career mark of 83-59-20 with a .913 save percentage and 2.67 GAA. The Pittsburgh Penguins originally drafted Gustavsson in the second round, 55th overall, of the 2016 NHL Draft. He was dealt to Ottawa in 2018 before debuting with the Senators in the 2020-21 season. Gustavsson was then subsequently traded to Minnesota in 2023.

He’s also represented his native Sweden at the international level. Gustavsson was part of the silver-medal-winning squad at the 2018 IIHF World Juniors. He was also a member of the Sweden senior team that won the bronze medal at the 2024 IIHF World Championships.

What It Means

Wild General Manager Bill Guerin isn’t resting on his laurels after an already massive week. Minnesota had already signed superstar Kirill Kaprizov to the richest contract in NHL history, with eight years and an average cap hit of $17 million.

Minnesota signing Gustavasson to this extension shores up the team’s crease for the next few seasons. The Wild have locked down some important players in the past year by taking care of deals for Brock Faber and Jacob Middleton.

Guerin is seemingly able to exercise his newfound cap freedom after the dead money from the Zach Parise and Ryan Suter buyouts. Getting Gustavsson’s extension done is another big piece of business for the club.
