NHL Rumours: New York Rangers Seek Upgrades

November 16, 2024 by Last Word On Hockey

NHL rumours

It’s time for another round of NHL rumours. We’re nearing American Thanksgiving an teams are trying to see what their roster needs are. Contenders and pretenders are starting to sort themselves out. These contenders are hoping to find ways to upgrade their respective rosters. We’ve seen some deals already done. However, some of these teams will have to wait until later on in the season to make a move. One of these teams that may have to bide their time is the New York Rangers. This edition of NHL rumours deals with one need the Blueshirts may address.

All NHL rumours come from the original source and are subject to change.

NHL Rumours

New York Rangers Looking for Defensive Reinforcements

Rumour: Dan Rosen of NHL.com in a recent mailbag said the Rangers may look to bolster their blueline. However, New York may have to wait until the trade deadline in order to swing a deal.

Analysis: One major concern that was brought up is the Rangers lack of a physical presence. The Rangers do have a lot of great skill players that pile up the points. New York may be fourth in a very tough Metropolitan Division, but are still 10-4-1 and putting up points. This is despite the team not playing at their best in the early-part of the season.

Players like Mika Zibanejad have been inconsistent, but the team is still one of the contenders in the Eastern Conference. Despite pulling out victories, the Rangers do know that they have to improve their play.

One thing Rosen brings up that the Rangers are getting bailed out by goalies Igor Shesterkin and Jonathan Quick. The Blueshirts have been giving up a plethora of high-danger chances and that likely won’t be a sustainable model for success.

What the Rangers Could Do

Rosen points out that Rangers Head Coach Peter Laviolette has likely tried to address these concerns. However, general manager Chris Drury is likely going to have to make a move in order to fix these some of these roster concerns.

New York probably needs to acquire a bruising defenceman that blocks a lot of shots and can eat up minutes. This type of player could also help the Rangers deal with their issues when it comes to zone exits. A player that’s good at making that first pass also would be helpful to the roster. It also wouldn’t hurt if this blueliner can throw his weight around at times.

Drury likely has started his wishlist for the March 7 NHL trade deadline. He would love to probably get this defender before that date. However, Drury may have to hold off on completing such a deal. Other clubs will have to fall out of contention and make players available before Drury can set plans into motion.

The Rangers will have to play better and be more consistent until management can make a deal. This is a talented roster that has lofty expectations. However, the Rangers have to take care of it themselves before Drury can augment the roster.
