Where We Stand at the Moment with Calgary Flames in Goalie Extension Talks
Rumour: Wes Gilbertson of The Calgary Herald took a peek at where things stand between goalie Dustin Wolf and the Flames. Wolf becomes a restricted free agent at the end of the season. However, he can sign an extension at any point.
Analysis: Wolf had a breakthrough campaign for the Flames last season. The 24-year-old finished second behind the Montreal Canadiens defenceman Lane Hutson for the Calder Trophy. Wolf has seemingly become the goalie of the future in Alberta. However, general manager Craig Conroy has to figure out what the next contract will be for the California native.
Wolf said that two sides are working on a deal, but he wouldn’t elaborate any further. The young netminder stated that he would love to stay with the Flames. He also added that the feeling seems to be mutual.
The All-Rookie team selection did give Flames’ fans some hope saying that he doesn’t think it’ll be a long wait until the two sides come to a contract agreement. That will be music to the ears of Calgary fans.
What It Means
Wolf came into his own with a stellar rookie season. He registered a record 29-16-8 with a 2.64 goals-against-average and .910 save percentage. The seventh-round selection also collected three shutouts in his first full season as the Flames starter.
Calgary was projected to struggle last season and it ultimately missed out on the Stanley Cup Playoffs. However, Wolf’s play helped the Flames stay in the mix until the final weeks of the season.
Wolf is the in the final season of a two-year deal that saw him make $850,000. It looks like he’s setting himself up for a nice raise after cementing himself as the Flames’ top goalie.
One wonders what Wolf’s deal could look like as the framework of a deal continues to take shape. Bryan Wilson of The Hockey News took a shot at what Wolf could get in his next deal with the Flames and uses a Pacific Division rival’s recent contract as a template.
Wilson talks about the recent deal that the Anaheim Ducks signed with Lukas Dostal a few weeks ago. Anaheim signed Dostal to a five-year deal with a $6.5 million cap hit. Calgary could do something like $6 million to $7 million to give Wolf that much-deserved raise.
